The Wine Industry Association of Western Australia offers introductory and advanced courses in wine appreciation. Both courses include a weekly 2-hour session for 8 weeks. The courses are recognised industry wide in WA and a nationally recognised certificate can also be attained.

The introductory course covers basic wine evaluation, red, white, sparkling and fortified wine production, wine regions, cellaring wine, wine and food matching, cellaring wine and the health benefits of wine consumption.

The advanced course builds on this information to enable the student to develop a systemised approach to wine assessment. This approach is used as part of an in depth study of the 8 classic wine grape varieties grown in Australia. Regional characters will be discussed and winemaking influences examined. The emphasis is on tasting and sensory evaluation. Each week 8 ultra premium wines are tasted with extensive discussion on each wine.
